Microsoft to end sale of Power Apps per app license

Editorial Team, MSDynamicsWorld.com

Microsoft has removed Power Apps per app licensing as an option going forward. The latest Power Platform Licensing Guide notes that this licensing was removed due to “end of sale”.

Per-app pricing has been on offer for over six years, having been introduced in July 2019 as a way to offer more affordable restricted access

Microsoft reduced per app pricing for Power Apps in 2021 to $5 per user/app/month as part of an effort to "make the platform more accessible, whether customers are getting started with a small number of users or deploying at scale," the company stated at the time.

Writing about the new change, Jukka Niiranen commented that Microsoft's conception of the per app license never coalesced into a proper model for customers.

I don't recall seeing a more chaotic license in the MS bizapps world. The problems with Power Apps per app are all down to the "move fast & break things" approach in how products get reimagined.

The initial concept was completely unenforceable. The V2 that both dropped the price to half and changed the entitlements was better. And still, we waited for years & years to get any reporting for admins to check how these Power Apps licenses were being used.

As part of the latest changes, Microsoft is keeping the Power Apps per app meter, which enables individual users to run one custom application with a pay-as-you-go model.

Last month Microsoft introduced into the licensing guide details on usage of the Dataverse MCP server, along with increasing default Dataverse storage capacity that customers will get for most Dynamics 365 apps and Power Platform services.
