Microsoft has announced the preview of Fabric, a new SaaS layer above six of the company's core data and analytics tools: Data Factory, Synapse data engineering, Synapse data warehouse, Synapse data science, Synapse real-time analytics experiences, Power BI, and Data Activator.
Fabric also includes the newly announced OneLake, which Microsoft describes as a “multi-cloud SaaS data lake” or “the OneDrive for data” that organizations should use to create a centralized data hub for data discovery and management. OneLake is “built-in and automatically available to every Fabric tenant,” wrote Arun Ulag, Microsoft CVP for Azure Data.
Microsoft is positioning Fabric as the centerpiece to SaaS analytics projects, encompassing Microsoft’s services that support various needs, from data storage and integration to modelling, monitoring, data streams, and analytics. Customers of the various services encompassed by Fabric can upgrade their products into Fabric “at their own pace”.
