Up, Up and Away: The Evolution and Expansion of Business Intelligence

by Doug Bonderud
Contributing Writer,

Evolution is essential.

At least, that's what new a new SITA survey shores up when it comes to business intelligence (BI) applications. In partnership with Airports Council International (ACI) and Airline Business, the study examines crucial drivers in IT investment at airports across the globe and this year discovered that improving passenger experience is the highest priority for 59% of airports. Chief among these improvement goals are keeping passengers informed about flight times, delays and equipping them with general airport information; something a robust BI solution is uniquely equipped to deliver.

Fight and Flight

Wrestling with big data is a new challenge for airports - passenger numbers are steadily on the rise but so is the amount of data these travelers generate. Along with airline, airplane and facilities information this data is quickly filling servers and challenging airport IT to mine actionable insights. According to the SITA survey, airports view BI as crucial in several areas, including:

  • information sharing and partner collaboration
  •        accurate customer service
  • reduced delays

SITA's CEO, Francesco Violante, says that "operators are investing in the ‘intelligent airport' to improve the passenger experience in an operationally efficient manner" both by adopting BI solutions and working with stakeholders to create what he describes as a "better passenger journey."

But flight isn't the only fast-moving industry seeing the benefits of a BI solution - the world of F1 racing is also getting an intelligent upgrade.
