Microsoft updates MVP categories and contribution areas for Dynamics 365, Project

Microsoft has been alerting some Dynamics-focused MVPs that the MVP program is adjusting its categories and contribution areas.

The updates are reflected in the latest set of MVP Contribution Areas, including the creation of the "Business Applications" award category. Dynamics AX and CRM-focused MVPs will classify their contributions under a single "Dynamics 365" contribution area under Business Applications. NAV and GP remain separate contribution areas, as do PowerApps and Flow. With the launch of Dynamics 365 Business Central ongoing, the NAV contribution area would seem to also have a limited lifespan.

The "Project" contribution area will be moved to the new award category name "Office Apps & Services".

The moves are being made now, Microsoft told MVPs via email, "in order to keep pace with the evolution and vision of Microsoft technologies."

Microsoft has adjusted the MVP program's classifications before. In 2016, they rebooted the program in attempt to be more regional, and less solution-specific. At that time, the classification of Dynamics-focused MVPs was changed to "Business Solutions". With Microsoft now referring to Dynamics 365, PowerApps, and Flow as Business Applications, like in the Business Application Summit, the new MVP category will better align with the product teams.

But having a single Dynamics 365 contribution area will keep things ambiguous, too. With the growing set of applications in the Dynamics 365 product line, it is likely that MVPs will have one or maybe two apps on which they can really focus and contribute.
