What is Wabi-Sabi and how does it apply to your Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central deployment?

by Cynthia Priebe - Microsoft MVP
Consultant and Managing Partner, MGC Group LLC

As a reader here, you may know of me as that person that loves Sharing the Righter WayTM to work in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. What you may not know is that I also love learning about style and design in my personal time. I was spending a weekend morning as I often do, surfing through recently added content on YouTube. That morning was my first exposure to Wabi-Sabi. As the presenter explained the concept, I became intrigued about how it might apply to the use and lifecycle of an ERP software like Business Central (BC).

Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese aesthetic philosophy, finds beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and simplicity. To gain a deeper understanding of this aesthetic and its origins in Wabi and Sabi, read Japanese Aesthetics in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.  Applying Wabi-Sabi principles to the use of BC software offers a unique perspective on maximizing BC’s potential while embracing its limitations. Let’s break down each of the Wabi-Sabi concepts and apply them to how BC supports an organization as it grows and changes over time.

Embrace Simplicity

Wabi-Sabi values simplicity and minimalism. In BC, this translates to configuring the software to match your core business processes without overcomplicating the system. Focus on essential features that directly support your operational goals, avoiding the temptation to over-engineer solutions. Don’t engineer today what you won’t need until 5 years from now. Are your business process requirements the same today as they were 5 years ago?

Value Imperfections

Those main concepts and how you fit them to BC implementations is 'spot on'. I plan to re-read this a few times!

Thanks Cynthia!
