Microsoft Ignite 2021: Container Apps, hybrid application support, and other developer service updates

In a session on cloud-native apps and open source on Azure at Ignite this week, Jeff Hollan, director of product for Azure Apps, described Microsoft's work to support the deployment of microservices or event-driven functions, together with APIs and DevOps support.

Developing on Container Apps

Microsoft recently announced Azure Container Apps, a service that supports microservices for Kubernetes in a managed, serverless platform, with the goal of assisting teams to build microservices without over relying on Kubernetes.

Container Apps supports multiple types of autoscaling and both event-driven and non-event-driven functions, Hollan explained. Developers working with Container Apps can "use any language, framework, or runtime,” he said.

In a separate Tech Community post, Microsoft team member Daria Grigoriu explained more about Container Apps, which run on AKS, with multiple apps supported in a single Container Apps environment. The platform is intended to streamline application lifecycle management by managing app versions, traffic splitting, and integrated monitoring, Grigoriu wrote.
