Understanding and using item types in Business Central
On the Evolution Business Systems blog, Hiru Saparamadu wrote that in Dynamics 365 Business Central, item types help you easily manage products and services. She noted that they make it simpler to track inventory, handle sales and purchases, and organize different kinds of items more efficiently.
Saparamadu stated that D365BC uses three item types to help you manage products and services:
- Inventory items: physical or identifiable non-physical goods, such as bikes or software licenses, that are fully tracked in inventory, including quantity and value.
- Non-inventory items: low-cost items, such as pens or bolts, that you buy or sell but don’t track in inventory. Often used internally.
- Service items: non-physical items, such as labor or consulting time. Used in sales/purchase but not tracked in inventory.
Saparamadu then wrote about how to manage item types, the costing methods for item types, and catalog and service items.

Writing on his blog, Ammolh Saallvi stated that with D365BC 2025 wave 1, Microsoft introduced a new page type called UserControlHost.
