Ignite 2022: Microsoft adding more Teams scenarios for Dynamics 365 users

Microsoft will add several new Teams touchpoints to Dynamics 365 applications, ranging from ERP data access to conversation analysis to embedded chat. The new announcements came at the start of the company's Ignite 2022 event.

Business Central data collaboration in Teams

In November, Teams users will have access to Business Central data from within the collaboration app, regardless of whether they have a Dynamics 365 license, the company confirmed. Access will be controlled by administrative tools and permissions but will allow Business Central users to invite people in the organization to work with the data in Teams.

Microsoft has announced plans to make more Dynamics 365 data available via Teams in July 2021, but at the time the approach was focused on CRM-related Dynamics 365 apps. Earlier in 2022, the Business Central team confirmed that they planned to “soon” offer a similar type of data access in Teams. MSDW reported at the time about a prototype of the Business Central-in-Teams scenario:

A demo featured a link shared in Teams by a BC user that the non-BC Teams user could click to bring up a new BC-based pane over the Teams interface. The pane displayed the relevant object but without menus, navigation, actions, and other elements that a BC user would get. The experience is more like "reading a piece of paper" than interacting with a web app, the Microsoft officials noted, with the intent of keeping non-BC users in a Teams conversation while still getting visibility into the business data.

Microsoft stated that the Business Central use case is enabled by Context IQ, the company’s capabilities designed to improve collaboration and data sharing between Dynamics 365 and Microsoft 365.
