A call to the Microsoft Dynamics AX community: New AX 2012 R2 Kitting solution is open-sourced

Kurt Hatlevik, a Dynamics AX MVP, has released a Dynamics AX 2012 R2 kitting solution to CodePlex and he wants the AX community to get involved in its development as an open source project.

"The main idea is to give back to the community for all the sharing that is currently taking place," says Hatlevik, who has a history of developing add-on solutions for Dynamics AX.

This specific Kitting solution is currently running live at 3 customers, according to Hatlevik, and he expects that many more will start using it.

Up to now, code that has been shared on CodePlex has often taken the form of small samples and tools.  Now, Hatlevik is trying to release a more completed solution, based on the initial customer implementations that shaped the first releases.  He hopes that once more customers start using the solution, it will gain momentum in terms of further development.

"CodePlex is a very good platform for crowdsourcing, and we see experts' desire to solve a complex problem and then freely sharing the answer with everyone," he says.

Customers interested in kitting are typically in the retail and distribution industry.  Kitting is the process by which separate but related items are grouped, packaged, and supplied together as one unit. For example, in ordering a PC online, a customer may select memory, drives, peripherals, and software from several alternatives. The supplier then creates a customized kit that is assembled and shipped as one unit.
