How to use item charges to account for additional costs in purchases and sales

Writing on the Innovia Consulting blog, Carolyn Hannon stated that item charges in Business Central help you add extra costs to items you buy or sell. Hannon wrote that these extra costs—called landed costs—can include such things as shipping, handling fees, insurance, and transportation. She noted that adding these helps you get a more accurate value for your inventory.

However, she pointed out that before you can assign item charges to purchases or sales, you need to create an item charge. This tells the system how to record those costs in your accounting books. Hannon stated that setting up a new item charge is quick and simple, and it just takes a few steps.

In her blog post, Hannon explained how to set up a new item charge. She wrote that after you've set up your item charges, you can use them to add extra costs to your purchase or sales records.

She noted that these charges can be added directly to an order, or you can add them later by using an invoice. In that case, she stated that you'll link the charges to the shipment or receipt that was already posted. Hannon also explained how to apply an item charge to a received item.
