It represents the second of a 3-part series about the basics of master planning for managing day-to-day operations. The contents apply to those firms using Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Operations or Dynamics AX 2012 R3.

Master planning calculations consider different types of demands and supplies. Common examples of independent demand include sales orders and demand forecasts, whereas other type of demand include component requirements in manufacturing scenarios or transfer requirements in distribution scenarios.  Common examples of supplies include on-hand inventory as well as planned and actual supply orders. Several optional types of demands and supplies may be considered based on master plan policies, and several additional types apply to lean and project manufacturing scenarios. Each type is identified in the net requirements for an item and in the item's supply schedule.

This article focuses on different types of demands and supplies, which represent some of the basics for master planning.
