The life of an independent Microsoft Dynamics consultant: Is it for you?
So, you wanna be an independent Microsoft Dynamics consultant. You've decided to leave the safety and security of your "9 to 5 job" - or maybe the decision was made for you. In any event, you want to try to make your way in the world as freelance consultant specializing in Dynamics products.
And why not?
As an independent consultant you'll have the freedom to choose your own clients, pick and choose the jobs you want to take on, set your own rates - and a myriad other perks you didn't have when you worked for "the man." Your commute, most likely, will be from your bedroom to your office. What's not to like?
But is the life of an independent Dynamics consultant all it's cracked up to be? There's so much you have to think about when you work for yourself, so many responsibilities that weigh on your shoulders, that the job - and the lifestyle - can seem overwhelming if you are unprepared.
First, there is the business of lining up work. Will you actively seek out your clients or will you rely on word of mouth advertising and wait for your customers to come knocking on your door. (FYI - for successful consultants, word of mouth often works well, although maybe not right out of the gate.)
Have you thought about your client acquisition strategy - and a plan for continuing to line up business beyond the first engagement?
You also have to figure out how - and how much - to charge for your services. How are negotiations going to work? Are you going to bill by the hour or by the project? Maybe being on retainer might work in some cases. You should also ...
