Do's and Don'ts of Microsoft Dynamics GP Forums: More Real World Lessons

Several years ago Microsoft Dynamics GP MVP Mark Polino wrote a wonderful article about what not to do when trying to get help on Dynamics GP forums.  Everything that Mark wrote is still absolutely true.  Over the past 10 years blogs and online forums have become an increasingly common way to get help for Dynamics GP and I have probably answered thousands of questions online.  From that experience, I would like to revisit some of the things that Mark wrote about as well as add a few thoughts of my own. 

DO:

Be polite and respectful.  You really do get more flies with honey.  Why not make a small effort to make your intended audience want to help you because you are nice about it?  The Dynamics GP online community is still small enough that people will remember you from previous questions and will be more apt to help you next time if you were polite and respectful.  Also, think about the possible unintended audience.  Your mother, your coworkers, your boss, your future boss, your customers and prospects, even your kids, could be reading what you are writing.  If you would not want them to read it, then you should not be posting it online. 

There is a lot of very specific Dynamics GP terminology that is difficult to get right until you have been using it for many years.  If someone misunderstood your question maybe they misread it, but maybe you could have worded it better.  It's ok to politely say, ‘Thanks, but that's not quite what I was asking, let me try to rephrase my question'.
