Microsoft Dynamics GP was designed to allow for add-on modules from its initial release. In the early 90's GP only offered General Ledger, Payables and Receivables Management. You couldn't even do invoicing by item, only by total sale. Today there are dozens of modules that are included with the core product purchase.
Extending the fit and functions to specific industries and company requirements is where the ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) come in. There have been hundreds of add-on modules offered over the years. Some of the first delivered Purchase Order and Sales Order Processing, opening up Dynamics GP to the distribution market. Today there are hundreds of modules that ensure Dynamics GP appeals to the widest range of industries and requirements from analytics to zip code verification.
A unique aspect of Dynamics GP's design allows for these ISVs to insert their software directly into the Dynamics dictionary and show up as embedded modules. Following the best of breed approach, modules can also link to or share data with Microsoft SQL Server as an outside program. Both methods have their advantages depending on customers' needs.
