Rumors of Microsoft Dynamics 365 app name updates emerge

Word of a suspected rename of Dynamics 365 for Operations and Dynamics 365 for Financials has started emerging over the last few days on social media.

UPDATE (10 May 2017): Microsoft offered the following statement confirming the naming update:

“We will be renaming Dynamics 365 for Operations and Dynamics 365 for Financials. We are changing the names of these business apps to better represent the breadth of financial and operations capabilities available in both apps, and to bring consistency to the naming approach across Dynamics 365. We’ll have more to share closer to the July 1 general availability date.” 

The two products are set to become "Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations" Enterprise and Business editions. Here is the graphic that was also shared on LinkedIn:

The changes come a month after word from a senior product team official that Microsoft was in fact planning an update to the name "Dynamics 365 for Operations" to clear up ambiguity in the current naming.

The new names accomplish at least one goal - they unify the brand. But in terms of impact, the choice is not setting the world on fire. As response to the information has spread this week on social media, most reaction, like on LinkedIn could best be described as disappointment. One person asked if it was a late April Fool's joke, while others complained about a change that is even longer and more cumbersome than the current naming.
