Microsoft re-org on intelligent cloud and edge adds more AI to Biz Apps group
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella
A new engineering reorganization at Microsoft will shift leadership of teams responsible for various cloud, mobility, device, and AI products. The news came in a letter to Microsoft employees from CEO Satya Nadella.
Scott Guthrie will expand his responsibilities to lead a new team focused on Cloud + AI Platform. In Nadella's words:
The purpose of this team is to drive platform coherence and compelling value across all layers of the tech stack starting with the distributed computing fabric (cloud and edge) to AI (infrastructure, runtimes, frameworks, tools and higher-level services around perception, knowledge and cognition).
On Guthrie's leadership team, Business Applications Group CVP James Phillips will gain new responsibilities over "Business AI". Specifically, the teams that develop the Customer Service, Marketing and Sales Insights solutions will fall under Phillips. These teams had been led by led by Gurdeep Singh Pall.
Nadella has named Rajesh Jha to lead a new team focused on Experience & Devices, which will have the goal of instilling "a unifying product ethos across our end-user experiences and devices. Related changes include Panos Panay as new Chief Product Officer on the Devices team, Joe Belfiore leading Windows experiences, Kudo Tsunoda leading "New Experiences and Technology", and Brad Anderson leading Enterprise Mobility and Management.
Harry Shum, who will continue to lead the AI + Research team, and Brad Smith are also forming Microsoft's AI and Ethics in Engineering and Research (AETHER) Committee, Nadella writes.
