Microsoft premieres a new generation of Azure VMware Solution

Microsoft commercial chief marketing officer Takeshi Numoto announced the launch of the company's next generation Azure VMWare Solution. The new offering is a Microsoft first-party service, built on Azure, and aimed at high availability.

Customers are able to provision a VMware Cloud Foundation environment on Azure and continue to leverage existing VMware investments, such as vSphere, NSX-T, vSAN and HCX. Additionally, it supports Hybrid Benefit, with customers eligible for Extended Security updates on 2008 versions of SQL Server and Windows Server.

When the offering becomes generally available, it will provide Reserved Instances. However, for now it is initially available in the US West and West Europe regions, set for GA in the second half of the year.

Numoto noted the potential savings of moving VMWare workloads to Azure, writing:
