Microsoft Dynamics GP Implementation: Theoretical and Practical Insights on the Project Life Cycle, Part 2

by Mahmoud M.
Senior Support Engineer, Dynamics Innovations,

Understanding the different stages of an ERP implementation project is an essential factor in achieving a successful project outcome. The first part of this article illustrated how the initial phases of the implementation project, requirements elicitation and GAP analysis, play a crucial role in building a firm foundation upon which to execute the next phases that translate theory into action and implement what is documented and agreed upon in the scope document into tangible deliverables.

The complexity and duration of an ERP deployment project is highly dependent on the scope, which should have been defined in previous phases of the implementation. As a matter of fact, the wider the scope, the more complex the deployment. Microsoft Dynamics GP is commonly favored for being an easily implemented ERP system that can be delivered within a competitive lead time. The various modules and wide range of functionality provided by the system makes it competitive among other mid-size ERPs.

The system deployment phase is commonly divided among several parts: master file preparation, system installation and setup, customization, and quality testing. Let's look at those from the perspective of a Dynamics GP implementation project.

  • Generally speaking, standard master files include the chart of accounts, customers, vendors, banks and fixed assets. In 99% of the implementations, the chart of account is redesigned completely to reflect the modularity concept in the ERP system. This include the discussion of the traditional account segmentation versus the analytical accounting module and dimensional analysis.
