The Microsoft Dynamics GP customer's roadmap to digital transformation

by Chris Gherardini
President, Turnkey Technologies Inc, Turnkey Technologies Inc

If you've been paying attention to the world of Dynamics ERP, you've probably noticed that Microsoft has placed Dynamics 365 Business Central and Dynamics 365 for Finance & Operations at the heart of its digital transformation strategy for business applications. Because of this, some people are concerned that the company will neglect Dynamics GP in terms of future development and augmentation, or that it will announce the product's end of life.

GP customers feel fierce loyalty toward the software. Luckily, the Dynamics community can rest assured that not only is GP support sticking around for the foreseeable future, it is also compatible with Microsoft's digital transformation initiatives. To help GP users understand how they can prepare for the future and maximize both their existing investments and their competitive edge for the future, my colleagues and I at Turnkey Technologies have prepared a framework that companies can use to develop their own roadmap for digital transformation.

The four pillars of digital transformation

Before you hit the road on your digital transformation journey, it's important to understand what the destination looks like. More than just adopting the latest updates, versions, and add-ons, digital transformation refocuses your business across four broad domains:

  1. Engaging customers
  2. Empowering employees
  3. Optimizing operations
  4. Transforming products

Engaging customers entails developing a thorough, data-driven understanding of current and potential customers at the individual customer and contact level so you can deliver personalized experiences. Empowering employees means using tools like Office 365 to provide a modern workplace where people can work on the go and collaborate using sophisticated, intelligent applications. Optimizing operations requires you to have digital tools to enhance business responsiveness through efficient management of people and assets. Finally, transforming your products involves using technology to drive innovation regarding the goods and services you offer.

For current Dynamics GP customers, the roadmap to digitally transforming includes various waypoints needed to gather the tools you need to reach these four pillars. Though the journey might seem daunting, you've already begun, especially if you’ve been keeping up with your GP upgrades.
