Microsoft Dynamics AX Lands in Leader Position of Latest Gartner Magic Quadrant for Product-Centric Midmarket ERP

Gartner Inc.'s latest Magic Quadrant is out, this one for ERP for Product-Centric Midmarket Companies, and Microsoft Dynamics AX has been positioned, along with SAP's Business All-in-One as a "Leader" in the vaunted upper right quadrant.

The authors specifically noted Dynamics AX's broad and robust functionality, low TCO through integration with other Microsoft products, and industry strategy. Additionally, they credit the robust Dynamics partner channel as a key to providing a variety of more complex solutions in the future. 

In comparison, SAP Business All-in-One got high marks for having the broadest and deepest solution, a fast-start program, and strong partner channel that has delivered prepackaged and precustomized versions of SAP's Business Suite.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV was noted in the report as a "niche player".

The software evaluated in the report was considered appropriate for product-centric midmarket companies with roughly $50 million to $1 billion in revenue.  Other related findings of the authors include:

  • Gartner projects flat to slight growth in the ERP market overall, but competition will remain high.
  • Role-based user interface, a strength of both Dynamics AX and NAV, is making collaboration and adoption easier.
  • Microsoft Excel remains the most common tool for extracting and analyzing data in the midmarket
  • Growing interest but limited adoption of SaaS ERP. Whereas other systems like email, HR, and CRM are more commonly implemented with cloud-based solutions, ERP lags in the midmarket, with the lower midmarket (below $100 million in revenue) showing more adoption where there are less complex integration requirements.
