How to apply Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations extensible data security based on the current user

Writing on his blog, Alex Meyer stated that he's written about extensible data security (XDS) in Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations in the past. However, he often gets questions from users who want to apply XDS based on the current user. The use case is something along the lines of:

'I only want a user to see sales orders/vendors/customers they created'

'Users should only see records where they are the approvers'

Meyer stated that in these cases, the XDS applied has to go against the current user logged into the system.

In his post, Meyer offered a test scenario and explained how to set up XDS in D365FO for the current user.
