How to test role access without a test account in D365FO

Writing on his Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations blog, Alex Meyer stated that for a recent project, he had to test custom role access within a D365FO environment. However, he wrote that he was having a difficult time getting a test account created to assign this access to.

My personal user had sysadmin access, was there anyway for me to be able to test role access with just my user account? Here is the solution I came up with!

Meyer noted that his idea was to have a simple form where he could assign and revoke the sysadmin role from a user. This would allow him to:

  • Assign the roles he wanted to test to his own user while assigned the sysadmin role.
  • Revoke the sysadmin role from his own user (leaving only the test roles assigned to his user).
  • Test the role access.
  • After testing, assign the sysadmin role back ...
