For Professor Cyrus Wong Chun Yin, being a Microsoft MVP has been part of his goal of being a top notch instructor. Yin teaches applied cloud computing technologies as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Information Technology (IT) of the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (Lee Wai Lee), teaching technical students skills that will help them succeed with major companies using Microsoft Azure and other hyper-cloud providers in East Asia. He told MSDW:
I’m not just a guy working with Azure, but also with AWS and GCP. There’s a reason why both my projects and output is not research-focused but much more applied. I do a game style assignment and some automatic scoring systems on top of AI and cloud platform. I build a lot with my students—everything is some student project. We are working together to build stuff differently in the domain. This is very different than commercial projects [because much of what we do is open source]. We like to contribute to NGOs.
According to Wong, cloud computing is “hot” everywhere, including in Hong Kong. To accelerate learning, Wong's program incorporates certifications for the major cloud platforms throughout its curriculum. For instance, students commonly spend large amounts of time completing Microsoft Learn modules to prepare for Azure certifications. Along the way, the program adds on additional course materials and lab exercises to prepare students for exams like the AZ-404 Administrator Associate certificate.
In the cloud computing community, Wong is part of a select group of IT professionals who have achieved high level certifications for Azure, AWS, and GCP. “My contributions are amplified by my students, because they are using Azure, AWS, or Google to build something meaningful,” he explained.
