Microsoft Announces Public GigJam Preview, Plans Office 365 Availability Later in 2016
The announcement of the GigJam project in July 2015 got Microsoft partners' attention at WPC 2015. Its ad hoc, cross-app, cross-device approach to business collaboration was both a new look and, perhaps, a representation of the new mindset at Microsoft.
GigJam is now in public preview, with applications available for Windows, Mac, iPhone and iPad - and an Android app on the way, according to Vijay Mital of Microsoft's Ambient Computing team. In his word:
"GigJam breaks down artificial barriers between devices, apps and people. In this new world, work becomes communal, with each person free to summon, divvy up and share just what they want, for only as long as they need, using any device."
One complaint that has been voiced so far is the lack of Windows 10 Mobile support (demo videos thus far even feature the iPhone).
The preview includes integration with popular systems including Salesforce, Dynamics CRM, Asana, Box, DropBox, OneDrive, Trello, and Wunderlist. Microsoft's own systems are prominent, and others like the Dynamics ERP solutions ought to be
Some of the use cases that Microsoft has promoted using these source systems include:
- Prepare for a meeting with others by bringing together calendar and email information
- Triage leads by bringing together cards that show leads and accounts from CRM, plus emails.
- Bring together calendar, accounts, contacts, opportunities, and files for planning a sales pitch
-
