Microsoft and Oracle announce Oracle Database Service on Azure

Microsoft and Oracle announced the general availability of Oracle Database Service for Azure, a new way for customers to provision and monitor Oracle databases with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Customers will be able to build new apps in Azure and manage high-performance workloads with an Autonomous Database on OCI.

Microsoft and Oracle partnered in 2019 to offer Oracle Interconnect for Azure in 11 different regions. Currently, the two companies are supporting major enterprise customers like AT&T and Marriott International, offer data ingress and egress options, and the ability to pay for the services a customer consumes—whether that is Oracle Autonomous Database or Azure Synapse. To support multi-cloud scenarios, Microsoft federates Azure Active Directory identities.

Speaking at Microsoft Inspire 2022 with Oracle chairman and CTO Larry Ellison, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said:

Two years ago we created our first of its kind offering to help customers use best of breed capabilities from Microsoft and Oracle in one solution and now we are making it even easier, launching this new experience that streamlines and simplifies deployment even further. Everything from cross-cloud network setup to identity management. Once launched customers will be able to manage the Oracle services they use every day, and manage their apps and data as a single solution, run their most important apps across our cloud platforms seamlessly. Hundreds of customers today in industries of every kind from manufacturing to retail are already running their production workloads across our cloud platforms.

Ellison added:

Both Oracle and Microsoft are excited about multi-cloud and connecting Azure and Oracle OCI.  You stay in the Azure console, and you can take that Oracle Autonomous Database and run Power BI against it for analytics, accessing Microsoft services as if they were in Oracle. Customers are very excited about this because now it’s easy to migrate from on-prem to the cloud.
