Microsoft Adopts ISO's International Cloud Privacy Standard for Dynamics CRM Online, Azure, Office 365

Microsoft has announced that it is the first major cloud provider to adopt a new international cloud privacy standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

Recently, independent auditors verified that Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online, Microsoft Azure, Office 365, and Intune align to the standard that offers a uniform, international approach to protecting privacy for personal data stored in the cloud, according to Brad Smith, General Counsel & Executive Vice President, Legal and Corporate Affairs, Microsoft.

Because it adheres to this standard, Microsoft's enterprise customers can be assured that they remain in control of their data and that it won't be used for advertising, for instance, according to Microsoft officials.

Why does this matter? Microsoft offers up several reasons, including the following:

  • You are in control of your data. "Our adherence to the standard ensures that we only process personally identifiable information according to the instructions that you provide to us as our customer," Smith said.
  • You know what's happening with your data. "We'll not only let you know where your data is, but if we work with other companies who need to access your data, we'll let you know who we're working with," he said. In addition, if Microsoft will alert customers to any potential data breaches.
  • Microsoft provides strong security protection for your data. Adherence to the standard ensures that there are defined restrictions on how Microsoft handles personally identifiable information, including restrictions on its transmission over public networks, storage on transportable media, and proper processes for data recovery and restoration efforts, Smith said.
