Platform update 8 to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition (formerly "365 for Operations") was just announced. It adds the "local business data" deployment model that had been previously revealed, plus table field extension and compliance capabilities.
Microsoft's lead program manager on the Dynamics AX and Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition (D365FOE) platform team, Rob Badawy, explained that some of the platform components will be shared by Dynamics 365 for Retail and Dynamics 365 for Talent. Those components "will now appear as ‘Dynamics 365 Unified Operations'," he wrote.
The biggest update to the platform this time around is the availability of on-premise deployment capabilities. Unlike the "cloud and edge" scenarios where data is transacted locally but also transferred to an Azure=based instance of Dynamics 365, the on-premise option will maintain all business data locally. Badawy explains:
"[W]e are excited to announce a new deployment option that will not require business data to be stored in the cloud. This deployment option supports running your business processes on-premises, supporting local transactions and storage of local business data, without replication of your business data to the Microsoft cloud. In these cases, the typical replication of business data in the Microsoft cloud (referenced in the cloud and edge scenario) is simply switched off."
