Five Supply Chain Trends that Microsoft Dynamics ERP users can embrace

As a veteran supply chain analyst and consultant, Adrian Gonzalez spends much time tracking key trends in the increasingly complex global business climate. After attending a recent industry conference at MIT, Gonzalez, president of Boston-based Adelante SCM, came away with a list of the top 10 supply chain trends, all of which could have a bearing on Microsoft Dynamics ERP customers.

In Logistics Viewpoints' What are your Top 10 Supply Chain Trends?, Gonzalez highlights some of the current top supply chain trends identified by industry leaders. Here are five of those trends and some thoughts on how Dynamics users can leverage them:

  1. Cloud Computing: Low cost and reliable cloud solutions for global supply chains are starting to emerge; "apps" will transform supply chains. Dynamics users already have access to various ERP deployment options, inclusive of partner-hosted and cloud-based systems.
  2. Business Process Convergence: Instead of automating inefficient processes, companies will eliminate them. By replacing intercompany business documents such as purchase orders with sense-and-response systems, for example, Gonzalez says companies will more seamlessly integrate intercompany functions. Dynamics AX has added more intercompany support in its latest AX 2012 R2 release, allowing users to set up intercompany processes that incorporate selected customers, vendors, and/or internal departments.
  3. Raw Material Scarcity:  This is driving innovation in materials, with companies replacing copper with aluminum, gold with copper, and steel with resin in certain cases. Companies will also need ...
