Dynamics AX Team Announces Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Compatibiltiy with AX 2009 SP1

The Microsoft Dynamics AX Sustained Engineering Team recently announced the compatibility of Microsoft SharePoint 2010 with Dynamics AX 2009 Service Pack 1.

And that's good news for customers, said Joe Marcus, Director, Solution Architecture, Ideaca Knowledge Services Limited

"Knowing what SharePoint 2010 offers, I would say one of the benefits is the future-proofing of the stack," Marcus said.

Without this compatibility customers would be limited to SharePoint 2007, which means if they wanted to upgrade their infrastructure to SharePoint 2010 they wouldn't be able to do that for their implementations of AX 2009, Marcus said.

"So you wouldn't have a homogeneous stack anymore. If you were a customer who had AX 2009 and your organization was moving toward 2010 SharePoint, you'd have to have multiple implementations of SharePoint," he said. "What this really does for an IT shop, is it puts them back into compatibility with the stack. So it's more of a future proofing for better [Microsoft] Office interoperability."

From an infrastructure standpoint, Marcus said what SharePoint 2010 brings to the table is support of the shift to 64-bit computing, so now customers can have all of their servers on the same 64-bit platform

Additionally, he said SharePoint 2010 also offers a cleaner administration interface for managing the SharePoint sites like improved search capabilities and improved indexing capabilities.

"So if we're storing documents to collaborate on then finding them is going to be better," he said. "But if I look at it from a total integration perspective with AX 2009, the key area where [SharePoint 2010] shines out is around Enterprise Portal.
