Azure portal performance: Users see improvements in some area while other issues persist

Azure portal, Microsoft’s central hub for managing VMs, VNets, storage, databases, web apps, and Visual Studio team projects, is a key tool for unified management and one of the most visible Azure services. But its central role means that performance challenges can quickly disrupt day-to-day operations. Recent conversations among users concerned by Azure portal problems suggest that issues crop up in some familiar ways.

MSDW spoke with users about common performance challenges and how to overcome them.

Spotting common challenges

Azure portal challenges seem to arise most often from its connection with other Azure services. Ryan Prejean, programmer and Azure specialist at Guardian Computer explained that Azure portal users often face issues around file share throttling and low input-output operations per second (IOPS). He added:

[There can also be problems with] high latency with metadata and requests, which often causes slower performance.
