Azure Landing Zone: Accelerating Cloud Adoption with Strategic Foundations

by Jeff Christman
Senior Consultant, Cloud Security

Azure Landing Zone (ALZ) is an excellent way to deploy critical workloads in Azure. As a developer, I’m always looking for ways to deploy workloads in a setup that is secure, scalable, and easy to manage. However, like many Azure capabilities, Landing Zone can be challenging to grasp if you haven’t already delved into the documentation.

ALZ is not a single product but rather a set of guidelines, best practices, and tools designed by Microsoft to help organizations set up a secure, scalable, and compliant cloud environment. The goal is to support resource implementation and management from the start. This structured approach ensures that your cloud infrastructure is not only robust but also aligned with your business needs and regulatory requirements.

ALZ provides a way to prepare for deploying workloads with specific requirements. It involves establishing a comprehensive networking structure, implementing robust identity and access management (IAM) using Azure Active Directory, organizing resources logically with resource groups and tagging, setting up governance policies through Azure Policy, and ensuring compliance with various regulatory standards such as GDPR and HIPAA. This holistic approach creates a secure, scalable, and manageable environment from the outset, allowing for efficient deployment and operation of cloud resources.

One of the significant advantages of ALZ is that it helps accelerate deployments with predefined and customizable templates. These templates provide a solid foundation, allowing you to quickly set up your environment according to best practices. It is also designed for secure growth, allowing you to scale up quickly.
