AT&T announced it will shift its 5G mobile network to Microsoft Azure. Through a new partnership with Microsoft, AT&T will use AT&T's 5G core and leverage Azure for Operators to run future workloads.

At the same time, Microsoft will have access to AT&T patents and carrier grade Network Cloud. With AT&T engineering and development working with Microsoft, the company hopes to boost security, better run containers and virtualized network services, as well as expand it footprint among other carriers.

Microsoft previously acquired Affirmed Networks and Metaswitch Networks in 2020.
