30 ways Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 users can keep improving their SCM processes

by Scott Hamilton
Consultant and Author, The Manufacturing Guild

A significant number of manufacturing companies still use Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 to run their business. While all of these firms are addressing their upgrade strategy and timing, many are also attempting to improve current system usage. Based on my consulting with some of these firms, master scheduling and supply chain management remain areas where companies can continue to improve, even with an older AX system.

Unfortunately for AX 2009 customers, the current literature tends to focus on the latest software release -- Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations, Enterprise edition, termed D365FOE for short - and very little on topics related to AX 2009 functionality.

Many of my articles published in MSDynamicsWorld.com assess best practices and key choices around using AX to manage a manufacturing business, starting with several AX 2009 articles drawn from my book Managing Your Supply Chain using Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009. The titles of subsequent articles referred to newer software versions, but the content often applied to AX 2009 users because the functionality largely stayed the same. This became especially evident in preparing several recent articles about common functionality. One example involves the use of safety stock requirements with illustrative screenshots from both AX 2009 and D365FOE. As a result, I reviewed my previous publications to identify those with a high degree of content applicable to AX 2009 users.[1]

This article provides a list of my previous publications relevant for AX 2009 users. The 30+ topics are roughly grouped into the following four major areas.

  1. Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP)
  2. Definition of Material Items
  3. Production Orders
  4. Supply Chain Management (SCM)
