Finance Where I'm From: Tax Regime Options in Guatemala with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central

One of the first questions I ask when a  Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central project starts in Guatemala is this: which income tax regime is the company in? Because in Guatemala, that's a choice. Businesses can opt to be taxed on their profits or, under a simplified regime, on their revenue, and their answer changes how the whole financial setup behaves. Visitors from countries with one-size-fits-all corporate tax find this genuinely surprising, and it's only the beginning of what makes finance work here distinctive.

This article covers the two pillars of tax for anyone bringing Business Central into the country: the FEL electronic invoicing regime, where essentially every document is born certified, and a tax landscape where regime choices and payment rules reach further into the ERP than most people expect.

FEL: Every document born certified

Guatemala's electronic invoicing system is called FEL, Factura Electrónica en Línea, and its rollout by the SAT, the tax authority, has reached practically all taxpayers. The mechanics follow the clearance logic common in the region, with a local flavor: each electronic tax document (DTE) is generated, digitally signed, and sent to an authorized certifier, which validates it, certifies it, and reports it to the SAT online, in seconds, before the document reaches the customer.
