Autonomous Testing Powered by Observability: A New Standard for Quality in Dynamics 365 F&SCM

As the pace of change in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management environments continue to accelerate, testing has become a key factor in protecting business operations.

The challenge is that traditional testing approaches are no longer keeping up with either the pace of change or the varied factors impacting the function and performance of D365 systems.

In many organizations, testing still relies on assumptions. Test cases are often incomplete, business users are not available to continuously define scope, and knowledge about processes becomes outdated over time. Likewise, the technology stack continues to evolve around the system. Microsoft pushes its periodic ERP updates, as do other business-critical ISV solutions. Add in customizations, integrations, Azure architecture, and the introduction of new elements like M365 Copilot and AI agents, and the story becomes even harder to account for over time.

As a result, each future round of testing validates what was documented, not what actually happens, and needs safeguarding, in the system.

The gap between documentation and reality

Most testing strategies are based on predefined processes. But real business operations are far more complex. Process flows continue to change, often subtly, as users introduce variations and follow paths that are never formally captured.

Over time, this creates a disconnect.

Tests cover the “expected” process, while real usage - including critical edge cases - remains partially untested. This is where risk starts to grow, especially in environments with frequent updates.

From automation to autonomy

Test automation improved execution speed and reduced manual effort. But it still depends on one key assumption: that someone already knows what should be tested.

Autonomous testing removes that limitation by using observability to capture real user behavior directly from the system. This creates a continuously updated, data-driven view of how the system operates and what truly needs to be tested.

This approach can be classified across five levels of maturity:

  • Level 1 – Observability-driven insights: No need for business users to define scope. Real user actions are captured and analyzed.
  • Level 2 – AI-supported maintenance: Test scripts are automatically “healed” and continuously improved, reducing maintenance effort.
  • Level 3 – Pattern recognition: The system identifies real usage patterns and proposes what should be tested.
  • Level 4 – End-to-end scenarios: Test cases are connected into realistic business flows that reflect actual operations.
  • Level 5 – Business day replay: Entire business scenarios can be replayed on demand to validate system stability under real conditions

This progression marks a shift from manually defining tests to continuously discovering and refining them based on real usage.

Observability as the foundation

At the core of autonomous testing lies observability - capturing user actions, workflows, and data changes directly from the live system.

This data is then processed using AI mechanisms such as pattern recognition and sequence analysis. Based on this, test cases are automatically generated, prioritized, and continuously improved. This approach reflects real business usage, highlights risk areas, and includes rare but critical scenarios.

Building confidence in business operations

As Dynamics 365 environments become more complex and release cycles accelerate, the cost of ineffective testing grows. Risk becomes harder to control when manual testing becomes more unpredictable and confidence in releases decreases.

Autonomous testing changes that dynamic by aligning testing with real business operations and providing a trusted way to adapt as business applications change over time. It reduces dependency on manual input, improves coverage quality, and enables faster, more reliable releases.
