Azure Expertise: Portal for Internet Explorer; Fluid Framework; AzCopy; Azure AD Connect upgrade; Logic App Service

This week, Azure experts share their thoughts on using the new portal for Internet Explorer, the implications of the Fluid Framework, installing AzCopy and more.

Looking into Azure Portal changes

Richard Hooper, writing on Pixel Robots, recently launched Internet Explorer and navigated to Azure Portal. He was prompted by a different welcome screen. Azure recognized that he was visiting from Internet Explorer and recommended downloading the Azure Portal app for "an optimized experience browsing."

Hooper downloaded the app and found that it can be pinned to the task bar or start menu. In its current version, 1.0.19, users have the option to run multiple instances of apps under different profiles. He noted that the multi-instance approach only works by setting up a short cut and using the –userData command line. "I believe this application was created for the companies that are forced to still use Internet Explorer and need to also be able to manage Azure. Perhaps we will be getting an Office 365 and Microsoft 365 Portal soon. Only time will tell," he wrote.

Collaborations in the Fluid Framework

During the Build 2019 conference at the beginning of May, Microsoft announced its Fluid Framework, as a collaboration tool to challenge Google Docs. Mary Branscombe, writing on Tech Republic, weighed in on the Framework's potential.

Apple's OpenDoc or Microsoft's Windows OLE compound documents and "universal canvas" Netdocs tools have attempted this type of collaboration before with little success. Compared to "chunks" of text that appear in current collaboration modes with Word, Branscombe stated that Fluid Framework seems like a smoother option. It runs through SharePoint Online, based on Azure SQL and Blob Storage. Fluid Framework also supports AI components which can recommend the best table or chart for displaying a particular type of data. She noted that an SDK available later in the year will allow developers to create apps with Fluid Framework and speculated that a new family of Fluid apps may begin to appear in coming months.
