Significance of Production Status in Microsoft Dynamics AX

The use of production orders and batch orders within Dynamics AX involves many considerations in designing effective business processes for manufacturing scenarios. One such consideration is the production status (aka order status) for an order, and its impact on system behavior. Production status determines whether master scheduling logic recognizes the expected requirements for components and resources for an order. It also affects the ability to modify the production BOM and routing, generate a picking list and raw material picking work, report actual production activities, reset order status, and delete an order.

This article summarizes the impacts of production status for production orders and batch orders, although it primarily employs the terminology associated with production orders for simplicity purposes. The explanation covers the latest software releases of Dynamics AX 2012 R3 (thru CU 11) and Dynamics 365 for Operations (aka AX7). However, the nature of order status and its impacts have largely been the same for previous software releases. The few exceptions primarily involve the use of advanced warehousing capabilities which were introduced in AX 2012 R3.
