Fully Utilize License Plates in Advanced Warehouse Management with Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3

by Scott Hamilton
Consultant and Author, The Manufacturing Guild

Editor's Note: The following article is drawn from Dr. Hamilton's new book about Warehouse Management using Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3.  The book covers the major approaches to warehouse management and their integration with the broader contexts of supply chain management, quality management and transportation management.

The full utilization of license plates represents one of the strategic options for using the advanced warehouse management capabilities in Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3, as described in a previous article.  These new capabilities support different viewpoints about the significance and use of license plates.  For example, they can be used to support inventory tracking of palletized items and they help simplify the reporting of warehouse transactions by license plate ID - such as receipts, moves and picking.

The new capabilities involve the use of license plate controlled locations within a WMS-enabled warehouse, additional unit of measure considerations, different approaches to assignment of a license plate ID, and optional use of nested license plates.  As an overview of the license plate capabilities, these considerations are reflected in several case studies and in the following sections within the article.

  1. Significance of a License Plate
  2. UM Considerations related to the License Plate for an Item
  3. Applicable Transactions for Assignment of a License Plate ID
  4. Assignment of a License Plate ID as part of a Mobile Device Transaction
  5. Using Locations that are not License Plate Controlled
  6. Definition of a Parent License Plate and its Nested License Plates
  7. Inquiries about License Plates
  8. Tracking Inventory at a non-WMS Warehouse
