It wasn't difficult to pin down the big story of 2011 in the Microsoft Dynamics AX world - that would be the release of Dynamics AX 2012 and all the planning, preparation, and positioning that went along with it.
Dynamics AX is not first in line for the Azure treatment, and that slow road to the cloud seems to be fine with the AX product team. They've been busy releasing 2012, preparing the next feature pack (planned for January 2012), and working on AX 2012 R2 for a 2013 release.

Convergence 2011 was the official introduction of AX 2012 to the general public, but the AX Technical Conference in January 2011 demonstrated to anyone paying attention that AX 2012 was a big deal. The sold out technical conference attracted over a thousand partners and customers who discovered a considerable amount of detail about the unreleased product's architecture, programming model, features, and more. The event was also notable for just how much information Microsoft was willing to share without NDA well ahead of the release (compared to, say, the NDAs attached to all NAV 7 briefings in recent months).
