As August drew to a close, Microsoft geared up for—and even began—its 2019 wave 2 release process. The wave 2 release preview for Dynamics 365 Business Central became available on September 2, giving customers a chance to test new functionalities in a sandbox environment before they get pushed into production. Tenant admins will receive an email when it's time to update different environments and can access the preview version through the version list in the Business Central Admin Center. As part of Microsoft's expansion of the System Application layer, the company is trying to standardize its handling of sensitive data with the Cryptography Module, which repackages existing hashing and encryption and making it available on GitHub. In on-prem versions, encryption is optional but it will always be on in the online version. On-premises versions will continue to have the option to retrieve encryption statuses and turn on or off encryption.

Wave 2 enables multiple Business Central production environments for every Azure Active Directory tenant, letting companies with operations in different countries set up freestanding ERP environments. Other D365 updates include better color contrast for visually impaired users and several new languages for D365 Guides or changes to D365 Layout that make it easier to scan a room.
