Financial dimension framework: X++ developer guide

On his blog, Vishal Sahijwani wrote that the financial dimension framework is one of the most confusing parts of developing in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations.

He stated that many developers first run into it when a journal posts to the wrong account because a dimension was set incorrectly, or when they try to assign a cost center to a custom record and discover that simply entering a text value doesn't work.

Sahijwani note that this is because dimensions in D365 F&O are not stored as text. Instead, they are stored as record IDs (RecIds) that point to data in the dimension framework tables. Once you understand how this works and know which of the many dimension APIs to use for different tasks, the framework becomes much easier to work with.

In his blog post, Sahijwani explained how the framework works, including the data model, the difference between default dimensions and ledger dimensions, the main APIs and when to use them, and practical X++ examples for common real-world scenarios.

How to monitor D365 F&O performance in 2026

An author writing on the Ryse Technologies blog stated that a D365 F&O implementation can appear successful at launch but still run into problems once employees begin using it every day.
