Multi-Carrier Freight for Dynamics 365, Run Through an AI Assistant
FreightPOP, an AI supply chain platform for mid-market manufacturers and distributors, has released an MCP server that gives AI assistants direct access to freight and warehouse operations. The connector exposes 11 platform tools across quoting, booking, tracking and warehouse inventory, and supports parcel, LTL, FTL, ocean, rail and international air.
The server implements the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI assistants to live business systems. Rather than asking a model to reason about freight from general knowledge, a customer connects their own FreightPOP account and the assistant calls real platform functions against their own data, including shipments that arrived from Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
What the MCP server exposes
Eight of the 11 tools are read-only:
- Rate quoting across carriers connected to the account
- Carrier and service lookup for available carriers and service levels
- Shipment tracking by tracking number or shipment reference
- Shipment detail retrieval returning the full record
- Address validation before a label is bought
- Warehouse inventory by item number
- Picking status for an order behind a shipment
- Inbound receipt search across expected and received receipts
Three tools take action:
- Create a shipment, either from a prior quote or ad hoc with a chosen carrier
- Import orders in bulk, up to 50 per request
- Cancel a shipment where the carrier still allows it
Read and write operations are exposed as separate tools, so any call that changes data is an explicit action rather than a side effect of a question.
How this works for a Dynamics 365 shipper
FreightPOP integrates with the Posted Sales Shipment transaction in Business Central. Shipment data imports on a ten minute cycle, and a lookup for a Posted Sales Shipment not yet in FreightPOP triggers a real-time pull from Business Central.
Each import carries the ship-to address, the Shipping Agent and Shipping Agent Service where those are already set, and line-level product detail down to item weight and unit cost. A logistics manager can then ask an assistant to rate shop that shipment across connected carriers, book the winning carrier, and confirm the pick status of the order behind it, without opening a second system.
Once the shipment ships, FreightPOP writes the Shipping Agent, Shipping Agent Service and tracking number back to the Posted Sales Shipment, so the record in Business Central carries current carrier and tracking data without anyone entering it.
Cancellation runs one way. A shipment cancelled in FreightPOP, whether by a user or through an assistant, does not currently write back to the Posted Sales Shipment in Business Central.
Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management sits differently. F&SCM includes a transportation management module of its own, covering planning, routing and rating across inbound and outbound orders, where Business Central has no equivalent module. FreightPOP connects to each on its own terms: to Business Central through the AppSource connector, and to F&SCM through the Data Management Framework or direct API.
The MCP server itself is identical in both cases. It exposes FreightPOP platform tools rather than ERP tools, so what an assistant can do does not change with which Dynamics 365 app feeds the shipment data.
Administrative control and access
Every call to the MCP server is authenticated to an individual FreightPOP user. Administrators control which users can connect through an AI Accessibility toggle available at both the company level and the individual user level, so access is granted per person rather than per account.
Business Central connectivity itself is unchanged by the MCP server. It continues to use token-based authentication through a Microsoft Entra app registration, against the standard Business Central OData and SOAP web services, with no custom API layer. The partner exposes the API pages and supplies the endpoints and credentials; FreightPOP integrates into those endpoints.
Availability
The FreightPOP MCP server is available now. Access is enabled per account through a FreightPOP account manager, after which administrators turn it on for individual users in the user manager and connect the AI client of their choice. Tool documentation is provided to customers when access is enabled.
About FreightPOP
FreightPOP is an AI supply chain platform for mid-market and enterprise shippers, unifying order management, warehouse management and transportation management in one system. Shippers manage parcel, LTL, FTL, ocean, rail and international air from a single login, across 1,500+ supported connections that include Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and Dynamics 365 Finance and Supply Chain Management alongside other major ERP platforms.. FreightPOP is listed on Microsoft AppSource.
FreightPOP AI is the platform's intelligence layer, covering rate shopping, dispatch, tracking and freight audit, alongside load consolidation, route optimization, yard management and dock scheduling. The MCP server extends that layer to whichever AI client a customer connects.
FreightPOP customers see up to 30% savings on freight spend, and 8 to 15% savings through automated invoice auditing. Auto-dispatch drives a 95% reduction in shipment processing time, customers see a 40% average increase in on-time deliveries, and the platform runs at 99.99% uptime. FreightPOP was named to the Inc. 5000 as fastest growing logistics tech in 2024 and 2025.
