Why Dynamics 365 Needs Industry Depth for Fashion

A t-shirt is never *just* a t-shirt. It comes in different sizes, colours, and fits, made of different fabrics and materials, and is assigned to a specific season or collection across several markets. Before anyone has bought, allocated, or sold a single unit, the t-shirt is full of data.

And then it starts to move through the business.

It passes from product development into the ERP, before moving into wholesale, point-of-sale, and eCommerce platforms. More tools appear to handle the processes a standard ERP can’t quite tackle by itself. Along the way, the information attached to that t-shirt becomes split across them. One system holds the style, another sees a bunch of SKUs, and someone’s spreadsheet has something else entirely.

Now imagine trying to use AI in that environment…

It may well recommend or do something completely wrong because it’s working with disparate data that only makes sense in the system it’s stored in.

Think of it this way: you would never suggest stocking more of an XS green t-shirt if you only cleared the stock through persistent markdowns, would you?

Yet if AI saw the raw sales data – with no other context – it could suggest replenishing that specific SKU solely because it sold out in multiple locations without knowing that demand was only there because it was sold at a cut price that resulted in significant losses.

This is where industry verticalisation earns its keep in the Microsoft ecosystem.

As Copilot and other agentic capabilities are rolled out en masse in D365 Finance & Supply Chain Management (F&SCM) and Business Central (BC), the data beneath them needs to work for the industries they are being asked to serve.

Both F&SCM and BC are excellent foundations for running finance and operations, but the reality is that fashion and lifestyle asks more than either platform can provide alone.

A single style could reasonably be created and sold in hundreds of size and colour combinations across multiple channels and markets. Each one has different processes and data requirements that shape commercial decisions throughout an organisation.

Merchandising may commit stock based on demand for specific variants, while allocation might decide where best limited inventory will sell through at full price and sourcing weighs whether lead times and landed costs make certain products commercially viable for the season.

It isn’t solely the data side that makes verticalisation necessary either. F&SCM and BC provide a robust starting point for much of a company’s operational work, but without the ability to quickly create a new collection that contains hundreds of SKUs, or raise thousands of purchase order lines, fashion teams will quickly find themselves losing countless hours to basic admin tasks.

These are the gaps we bridge at K3 Fashion Solutions.

As a specialist ISV with more than thirty years under our belt supporting fashion and lifestyle brands, we extend both F&SCM and BC with the fashion-specific data structures and processes that companies need to work quicker and smarter within Microsoft’s ERPs.

Not only are we able to save substantial time for our customers through intuitive matrices and wizards that speed up item creation and order entry, but we consolidate data in a way that’s bespoke to fashion so that AI can easily digest it and make practical suggestions and actions.

To help illustrate how our solutions support AI initiatives, imagine that a heatwave has hit and demand for swimwear is at an all-time high. A retailer wants to capitalise on the surge, but is unsure whether the cost of air freight to get products into stores quick enough is viable.

A demand and supply agent with access to product, sales, supply chain, and financial data could model the available delivery options and show how each affects the timing and profitability before anyone commits.

This is only possible if the agent itself is fed data from each operational area, something that is decidedly harder if all of that information lives across multiple systems and spreadsheets.

While just one potential use case, it shows just how powerful AI can be provided that it works from a consistent and structured dataset like those supported by K3.

For Microsoft partners, our vertical solutions provide the industry depth needed to take F&SCM and BC into fashion without recreating the same specialist functionality during every implementation.

For customers, the proposition is simpler. You retain the value of Microsoft’s platforms while gaining a system shaped around the way fashion operates, with the structured industry data needed to support AI as new capabilities develop.

If this is of interest to your business or Dynamics practice, we’d be happy to talk and answer any questions.
