Why a Single Global Dynamics 365 Business Central Rollout Breaks in Latin America

Latin America on orthographic map

Over the years I've seen a lot of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central rollout plans, and most follow the same script: build a global template, validate it at headquarters, and roll it out region by region. It usually works. Then the project arrives in Latin America.

The question partners ask me all the time is some version of this: we already have Mexico running, can't we just copy that setup to Colombia? I understand why they ask. On paper it looks like the same job. In practice, that question is usually where the longer conversation starts.

There is no such thing as a “Latin America” localization. Mexico has SAT, Colombia has DIAN, Peru has SUNAT, Chile has SII, the Dominican Republic has DGII, and every one of them writes its own rules. Different electronic document formats, different validation procedures, different reporting. What runs perfectly in one country rarely transfers to the next, because the compliance logic isn't sitting in the field labels. It lives in the data model, the document flows, and the integration with whatever validator that particular government requires.

We see the same story often enough that I can almost predict how it goes. A partner brings us into a project where Mexico is live and stable, and the plan says the next country goes live in a quarter with “the same configuration.” Then discovery starts, and it turns out the plan assumed the work was mostly translation. The e-invoicing integration doesn't carry over. Neither does the withholding logic, or the legal reporting. The timeline gets rebuilt, the budget conversation gets reopened, and nobody enjoys that meeting.
