Microsoft to delay new SKU for Dynamics 365 additional database storage

Microsoft is delaying a planned update to licensing of Dynamics 365 enterprise solutions additional database capacity, the company advised this week.

This week's announcement aims to put a hold on plans the company shared with partners last week to increase database storage pricing by 800 percent starting in October 2018. The change would also add greater flexibility in allocating storage among D365 instances.

Microsoft is now advising that: "[t]he changes were not complete, and the public release was unintentional. We are in the process of reversing the changes, and plan to revisit storage capabilities and pricing more holistically at a later date. "

Several partners alerted to the change of direction have voiced relief that these plans will be refined further. Reaction to the initial price change announcement last week had been mixed, with one partner noting that the impact would be limited to a fraction of customers. Another noted that limitations on the ability to easily separate file storage and database storage were part of the problem caused by a price increase. Others felt it could cause a perception problem that would mask potential benefits from improved flexibility of allocating resources and server instances.

While the plans are on hold, Microsoft is advising partners not to sell the new SKU and product name for the database storage add-on that will show up on the CSP price list in the month of October, and instead wait until November. But any customer who has already ordered it can continue to use it.
