How to Build and Publish Your Reports with SmartList Designer for Microsoft Dynamics GP 2015

Are you looking for ways to produce better reporting with Microsoft Dynamics GP? In a recent MSDynamicsWorld.com webcast, Microsoft Senior Program Manager Jennifer Ranz introduced SmartList Designer and explained how it can work for GP customers looking to improve the way they build SmartLists and publish reports out to the organization.

Smartlist Builder Publish

SmartList Designer is a tool within Dynamics GP that allows users to create and modify SmartLists and Excel Reports. SmartList Designer, which became available in Microsoft Dynamics GP 2013 SP2, lets users create and publish refreshable Excel reports to a SharePoint site where people outside of the GP product can see that information, Ranz said.

In Dynamics GP 2015, Microsoft created a tighter integration between SmartList Designer and Excel. This helps users create SmartList Designer objects using SQL queries that can then be used to publish out to refreshable Excel spreadsheets. The user can open the report in Excel and the data will always be up to date. Users can use the data connection created by the Refreshable Excel Report to create reusable reports. 

SmartList Designer lets you:

  • Create queries based on table definitions found in Dynamics GP and any third-party application (any Dexterity dictionary table definition)
  • Create a new SmartList or create a new SmartList based on an existing SmartList
  • Modify the SmartList that you created using SmartList Designer
  • Add multiple tables, and restrict the fields that are available to display on the SmartList
