A View to a Kill: How Management Reporter Has Sparked a Mass Exodus from FRx

My 13 and 16 year old daughters think that both computers and accounting/ERP software are boring. Wait until they read this post! Now I've got them.

Seriously, Management Reporter (MR) appears to make just about every financial report writing person's work easier. The purpose of this post will be to focus on whose life is made easier during this mass exodus from FRx to Management Reporter. The first "view" I would like to share is that of the user. If you are a user, you should read all of the ideas from the various perspectives as they may be useful to you.

The software feels and looks like an up-to-date .NET-based program rather than a dated Access-based program and user interface.  In addition, there are many smaller improvements that together have proved valuable to users.  They include:

  • The dimension reporting flexibility is appealing to users. No longer do you need to make sure the whole account string is accounted for. Instead you have more flexibility with the dimensions from the chart of accounts. (See the screenshot further down)
  • Maintain and secure Row, Column, Tree, and Report definitions into folders by type, function, category, or user.
  • Tailor your workspace with the ability to hide columns in the Row, Column, and Tree definitions.
  • Group daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly reports to generate consecutively.
  • Insert graphics such as your firm logo.
  • Stress key numbers such as having negative numbers turn red.
  • Many users seem interested in the scheduler. FRx had this ability, but we found the MR scheduler is more reliable.
