Beyond Fixes: Microsoft Dynamics GP 10’s Service Pack 1 Adds Important New Functionality
It’s not unusual for CFOs to complain about software maintenance costs. Often they don’t see the value beyond the occasional support call and service pack. That’s why it’s nice to see Microsoft delivering some terrific additional functionality with the recently released feature pack for Dynamics GP 10.
Feature Pack 1 is more than just a service pack of fixes, although there are useful fixes. This Feature Pack also adds some very nice functionality, including the following
- For starters there’s the Office Excel Report Builder. Essentially, this uses the familiar Smart List Builder interface to create and deploy Excel files with a live connection back to the data in Dynamics GP. This means that when Dynamics GP changes, your spreadsheet is updated. We’ve been able to accomplish that for a while in Dynamics GP via special programming, but the combination of Office Excel Report Builder and Office 2007 make this functionality accessible to the average user.
- Then there’s the new Inventory Historical Trial Balance Report. Now, no matter what your inventory valuation method, FIFO, LIFO, Average Cost, etc., you’ll be able to easily tie inventory values back to the General Ledger.
- Field Service adds an after-the-fact connector between Sales Order Processing and Contracts along with a number of other improvements. The Project Accounting module also benefits with cost allocation between products, payroll burden allocation and several improvements to the project setup process.
- Feature Pack 1 brings SQL Server 2008 compatibility to Dynamics GP once SQL Server 2008 is released. It’s nice to be ahead of the compatibility curve for once....
