Getting started with Dynamics 365 Project Operations Billing integration with D365 Finance

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Project Operations is designed for project-driven organizations that need to manage complex engagements across multiple teams. By connecting Project Operations’s sales, resourcing, project management, and finance capabilities with D365 Finance, organizations can create a unified solution that aligns with their unique business’s needs. The integration of billing between these two applications ensures that project transactions flow seamlessly from project execution to financial reporting, enabling organizations to maintain accuracy, compliance, and efficiency across the entire project lifecycle.
Pre-requisites and Considerations
The prerequisites for integrating Dynamics 365 Project Operations billing with Dynamics 365 Finance cover a broad range of technical and business considerations.
Environment & Deployment
The D365 Project Operations and the D365 Finance and Operations environments should be provisioned in the same tenant for integration.
Dual-Write Integration Setup
The dual-write framework must be configured between Dataverse and Finance. Entities like Project contracts, contract lines, projects, billing milestones, and resources are synchronized. Dual-write ensures real-time data flow between Project Operations (front-office) and Finance (back-office).
Master Data Synchronization
Master data entities like Customers, Vendors, Resources, Product, Price Lists, Financial Dimensions & Tax Groups must be aligned/synchronized between D365 Project Operations and D365 Finance.
Licensing & Module Alignment
Correct licensing for Project Operations (resource/non-stocked scenario) and Finance is required. Ensure both apps are on compatible release waves.
Configuration Requirements
The Project Contracts, Billing milestones, expense & Time tracking must be defined in Project Operations. The Revenue Recognition Policies will be configured in Finance to manage fixed price vs. T&M projects.
