One Tool for Guiding Novice Microsoft Dynamics AX End-Users

Many of us have gone through the intimidating experience of initially learning a new ERP system, starting with the navigational details and key constructs until achieving a basic proficiency level.  This is especially true for the project team members at the start of a typical AX implementation project, where the users - that are experts with their existing system - must start from scratch in terms of learning the AX end-user experience.  There is a distinct vocabulary for describing the Microsoft Dynamics AX user interface and system usage, and this vocabulary can only be understood by actual system usage.  A basic proficiency level provides the starting point for learning the embedded conceptual models within AX, so that the company can leverage AX for their business model (as described in a previous article).

Multiple tools are available to help users achieve a basic proficiency level with the AX end-user experience.  These include the computer-aided training and classroom training materials developed by Microsoft, as well as the on-line user documentation about form/field help and conceptual topics. 

I have tried variations of these tools and my own self-developed tools in different implementation projects, but each tool had its shortcomings in helping users quickly achieve a basic proficiency level.  Therefore I am always on the lookout for a better approach.  I recently found one when I read the book Using Microsoft Dynamics AX 2009 by a seasoned AX consultant from Europe.  This article summarizes my observations about the book, and my conversations with the author, Andreas Luszczak from Austria.
